Audience segments

Save a named, reusable filter over your clicks — country, device, OS, platform, campaign, app-open outcome — and watch it evaluated live, with a total and a per-link breakdown.

Audience segments

A segment is a saved filter over your clicks with a name on it. Instead of re-picking "US · iPhone · actually opened the app · last 30 days" every time you wonder how your American superfans are doing, you save that slice once as "My US superfans" and Zippy evaluates it live every time you open it — a total count plus a per-link breakdown of where those taps came from.

Segments are the "who is my audience, really?" answer: not who followed you, not who commented — who tapped your links and actually landed in the real app.

Audience segments are available on Hero and up, in the web dashboard (mobile is coming).

What a segment is (and isn't)

  • It's a saved filter, not a saved list. Zippy stores the rules ("US, mobile, opened the app, last 30 days") — never a roster of people. Every time you look, the rules are re-run against your live click analytics, so the numbers are always current.
  • No person-level storage. Segments are computed from the same anonymous, aggregated click and outcome data your analytics already use. Nothing new is collected about your visitors.
  • It's reusable. One segment, checked whenever you want — after a drop, after a reel, after a campaign — same definition, fresh numbers.

The dimensions

Mix and match any of these; every one is optional. An empty segment just means "all my traffic".

DimensionWhat it meansValues
WindowHow far back to look7, 30, or 90 days (default 30)
CountryWhere the tap came fromAny country (two-letter code, e.g. US)
DeviceWhat they tapped onmobile · desktop · tablet
OSiPhone or Androidios · android
PlatformThe app the link points atinstagram, tiktok, spotify, …
CampaignThe utm_campaign the click carriedYour campaign name
OutcomeWhat actually happened after the tapopened · browser · broken

Outcome is the special one. Most tools stop at "clicked". Zippy's redirect engine also records what happened next: did the tap open the real native app, fall back to the browser, or break? A segment filtered to opened is your true-fan slice — the people who ended up inside the actual app, not stranded in a web tab.

One limitation on outcome segments

Click dimensions and outcome dimensions come from two different measurements. The outcome beacon records country, device, and platform — but not OS or campaign. So a segment can't combine an outcome filter with an OS or campaign filter; the dashboard won't let you save that combo, and the API rejects it. Everything else mixes freely.

Live counts — an honest note

Segment counts come from the same sampled analytics engine as the rest of your Zippy stats. At high volumes the engine counts a representative sample and extrapolates, so a segment's number is a rate and trend signal, not an exact tally — 4,900 vs 5,100 is the same story; 500 vs 5,000 is a real difference. The dashboard labels sampled counts so you're never guessing what kind of number you're looking at. (Same framing as the analytics pages — we'd rather tell you how the sausage is made.)

If you have no clicks in the window yet, you'll see an honest zero — never a made-up number.

Set it up

In the web dashboard, open Audience → Segments:

  1. Hit New segment and pick your filters — the preview count updates live as you tweak, before you save anything.
  2. Name it something you'll recognize ("My US superfans", "Android drop-offs", "Summer campaign · opened").
  3. Save. The segment now shows its live total and a per-link breakdown — which of your links this audience is actually tapping.

Edit or rename a segment anytime; delete ones you're done with. You can keep up to 20 segments per workspace.

What's next for segments

Today a segment tells you how big a slice is and which links feed it. Segments are the first brick of Zippy's audience tools — the second is email capture, which turns a tap on your fallback page into a contact you can actually reach. Future updates will let you do things with a segment, not just watch it. The definitions you save now will carry forward.

Notes

  • Hero and up. On lower plans you can still delete old segments, just not create or evaluate them.
  • Web dashboard only for now; mobile support is coming.
  • Segments read the same data as your click analytics — they respect everything upstream, like audience routing and UTM tagging (a routed, tagged tap shows up with its country, device, and campaign intact).
